Welcome. I'm Doug Morris and I've been an artist for as long as I can remember, although it took me many years before I became a mural artist and faux finisher.
On leaving school I entered college to study graphic design. After graduation I started out in package design, then moved into corporate identity, print, exhibition and interior design. As I moved up the career ladder I became more involved in the business of design rather than the excitement of creativity. The constant requirement to justify every design decision became increasingly frustrating, and generating ideas and planning them for other people to produce became less and less satisfying.
So, in 1986, I took the opportunity of a company restructuring to design myself out of a job.
During a year long sabbatical, spent traveling and thinking, I concluded that I wanted a more hands-on involvement with the design/production process.
I returned to college to take a degree in crafts, experimenting with wood, metal, ceramics and glass, supplementing my income with commercial design commissions. Then, a friend invited me to help him with a faux finishing project.
That was the first time I was able to experience the sense of wonder and appreciation people feel when they see the impact a decorative finish can have on their home.
In over 12 years working in the Phoenix area, each project has been another opportunity to help people bring their imagination to life, to bring out the feeling they want in their home. And to make it happen so they can experience this magic for themselves.
Working with homeowners, designers, builders and painting contractors I help select colors and where to use them to achieve the desired style and character. To add warmth and depth to set off furnishings and drapes. To provide an appearance of age or elegance. To create a background or a statement.
A decorative wall finish can make such a difference to how a house looks and feels that many people who start off wanting just one or two areas painted can end up decorating several. As one of them said, "It was addictive!".
Customers have often added decorative artwork in response to the effect a selected finish creates: Using it to emphasize a particular feature or to create a focal point.
And many of my murals have been painted to give a room a different sense of place or time, or to establish or extend a theme.
Over the last couple of years I have also frequently been engaged to repair or extend existing finishes originally painted by other artists who have either left the area or the business. This requires a different set of skills from an original installation project and can sometimes be even more challenging - particularly if the original colors aren't available and have to be visually matched on site.
Depending on the project, once an estimate is accepted and a deposit received, I produce samples and sketches for approval and schedule the on-site installation. I arrive when I say I'm going to arrive, and do what I say I'm going to do. I carry this throughout the project. This is why I only work on-site in one home at a time. This way, although I may have other projects in progress, your life is not disrupted for longer than is necessary.
I aim to be as unobtrusive as possible and my intent is always to do what is required as efficiently as possible.
I have decorated just about everything. From whimsical laundry rooms and children's bedrooms to traditional formal living rooms. From Santa Barbara style great rooms to Tuscany style farmhouse kitchens.
Wherever your home needs a special touch, I can paint the "WOW!" on your walls.
